Here are basic eight dental health products for good oral hygiene and a shinning smile:

  1. Toothbrushes -Toothbrushing helps in plaque removal, keeps the mouth clean and healthy, and helps to get rid of bad breath. To prevent the spread of disease appropriate cleaning, storage, and replacement of toothbrushes are necessary. Choose a soft bristle toothbrush with a diamond-shaped head for a good cleaning.

3. Dental floss - Flossing helps to maintain oral hygiene and helps in the removal of dislodged food between the teeth. This decreases the chances of tooth decay and gum disease. Along with brushing flossing should also be made in practice. It takes only 2–3 minutes.

4. Dental picks and sticks - These are alternatives to dental floss for people with larger spaces between their teeth. These come as wooden or plastic. People with braces or missing teeth, or those who have had gum surgery can use it.

5. Oral irrigators - This oral hygiene appliance shoots a steady stream of water in the mouth to remove food from hard-to-reach places between and around your teeth.

It is helpful in cleaning around braces for teens and for people with fixed partial dentures. An oral irrigator is an additional dental product rather than a substitute for routine brushing and flossing. Look for one that is easy to regulate so the water pressure isn’t too high.

6. Teeth whiteners - These come as over the counter in form of whitening strips or you can go to a dentist, where you can get a product with a custom-fit tray. To bleach hydrogen peroxide is used in whiteners. Teeth whitening is better when you visit a dentist rather than the strips because the peroxide solution isn’t as strong and the strips aren’t customized to fit your mouth.

7. Mouthwash - Different mouthwashes are there for different dental problems. Some are for reducing plaque and preventing gum diseases; others contain fluoride to help against cavities. Some can control bad breath. A mouthwash may provide additional protection against cavities and gum disease if you have difficulty brushing and flossing. Take your dentist’s advice for the most suitable mouthwash according to your oral hygiene.

8. Tongue scrapers - Bad breath can be masked by using tongue scrapers. It helps in reducing the number of bacteria that cause it. You can clean the tongue with your toothbrush as well. Brushing your tongue reduces bad breath by 70 percent.

Even with these cleaning aids, it is recommended to visit a dentist every 6 months if you are less prone to tooth decay and have good oral hygiene, but if you are more prone to tooth decay, you should visit a dentist more often. Many oral problems that have no signs or symptoms are undetectable unless you visit a dentist on regular basis. Dentists just don’t look for cavities — they look for gum disease, problems with your bite, bad breath, and health problems like oral cancer and even sleep apnea. Whenever you visit a dentist ask him what all precautions you should take according to your oral hygiene.
